The Hewlett Foundation has provided funding for a research project which will be led by OER Hub at The Open University (UK). The focus of the work will be the use of open textbooks in the UK.
Open textbooks have seen impressive growth and impact in the North American context, through providers and initiatives such as OpenStax, Open Textbook Network, BC Campus, and Lumen Learning. Students and institutions have saved many millions of pounds. With the exception of Siyavula in South Africa however, the open textbook model has largely been restricted to the USA and Canada. The aim of this project is to test the transferability of this model to the context of UK higher education, and we will be working with OpenStax, Open Textbook Network and a range of education and technology specialists in the UK over the next year.
This short form is used to collect information about people in UK higher education institutions who would be interested in being involved with the project and potentially joining a consortium of UK education providers who are piloting and evaluating open textbooks. If you’re UK based; working in higher education in any capacity; and interested in getting involved please don’t hesitate.
Any information you share will be kept within the project team and only used to keep you updated on the project.
We’re looking forward to working with you!

Greetings. In the author of two of BCcampus’s open textbooks, both on Canadian history. I’m going to get funding soon for a third. Along the way I’ve learned a fair bit about what works and what works less well. I would be interested in collaborating with British authors/creators on a project in some capacity. Might be fun. Sincerely, John Belshaw, PhD, FRHistS.
Hi John, thanks so much for getting in touch and your interest in UK Open Textbooks! It would be great to talk more. Please DM us on Twitter (@UKOpenTextbooks) or email me (see: http://www.open.ac.uk/people/rep237) and we’ll set something up! Thanks again and all best wishes, Beck Pitt
